Gatto is a lifelong resident of Des Moines and a graduate of Lincoln High School. He is married to Ann Gatto, and together they have three children. Since 1993, Gatto has successfully operated Baratta’s Italian Restaurant on the City’s South Side as a part-owner. He has been a Des Moines City Councilman since 2014. Gatto has multiple family members who grew up in Pleasant Hill and the East Side of Des Moines, and looks forward to serving the needs of those communities.
Gatto’s accomplishments include securing funding for critical infrastructure projects, improving emergency response times, promoting sustainable development, and fostering initiatives to support small businesses. In his time on the council, Gatto has engaged with neighborhood associations to understand the evolving needs and concerns of his neighbors. “I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to serve our community, and I look forward to striving for a stronger, more inclusive Polk County,” said Gatto.
In addition to serving on the Des Moines City Council, Gatto has been involved with several key regional boards. He has served for five years on the ICON Water Trails board, is a member of the Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority (WRA), and has spent the past 11 years with the Des Moines Metropolitan Planning Organization, where he currently serves on the Executive Committee. He also sits on the Metro Waste Authority Board and is a former board member of the Des Moines Art Festival.
Gatto volunteers for several civic and charitable organizations, such as the Blank Park Zoo and the SW 9th Revitalization Committee.
Polk County’s 4th District includes East Des Moines, parts of Southeast Des Moines, Pleasant Hill, Runnells, Camp Township, and Four Mile Township.
